Every seasonal swap follows the same pattern: pull the bin down from the closet shelf, unpack it, hang everything back up more or less where it was last year. Ten minutes, done, and nothing about the closet has actually changed — including the fact that half of it never gets worn.
The swap is a sorting opportunity, not a chore to rush through
You're already doing the hardest part of the work: everything is out of the closet and in your hands, one piece at a time. That's precisely the moment sorting is easiest — far easier than trying to reorganize a closet that's already full and hung. Rushing through the swap to “get it over with” means missing the one window all year where a real reset barely costs you any extra time.
Sort as you unpack, instead of just re-hanging
As each piece comes out of the bin, place it into one of three piles instead of straight onto a hanger — Top, Bottom, or Extra. You'll immediately notice pieces you'd completely forgotten existed, plus a few you genuinely don't reach for anymore. That's useful information you'd never get from a straight re-hang.
Don't buy anything until you've done this
The urge to buy “a few new pieces for the season” almost always shows up before the sorting does — which means you end up buying to fill gaps that might not actually exist. Sort first. More often than not, the outfit you were about to shop for is already sitting in one of your three piles, just never paired with the right things before.
